Support Neurodiverse Youth
Bots of Another Color: ASD Robotics Program is an innovative robotics program designed for neurodiverse children aged 10 to 18 with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Founded by Head Coach J.D. Hoverman, who draws on his personal experiences with ASD, the program aims to provide a nurturing environment where participants can socialize, feel included, and leverage their unique focus and interests in a group setting. By encouraging teamwork and the deconstruction and reconstruction of robots, the program fosters social skills, broadens interests, and promotes problem-solving from unique perspectives.
Hoverman's mission is rooted in his own childhood experiences of feeling overlooked despite his knowledge and enthusiasm for various subjects. He understands the value of focusing on a problem and offers a space where participants' natural abilities are seen as strengths. Bots of Another Color emphasizes the importance of collaboration, allowing kids with similar interests to work together, thus enhancing their learning experience and enjoyment.
The program has faced challenges, such as funding limitations and logistical issues, which have impacted the availability of resources and the complexity of designs. Nevertheless, participants have shown resilience and ingenuity by repurposing old robots for parts. Support from the community, including a significant donation from Fitger’s Brewhouse, has been crucial in overcoming these obstacles. The brewery's CEO, Rod Raymond, expressed a personal connection to the cause, highlighting the program's role in providing a safe and creative space for participants.
Donations to Bots of Another Color are encouraged to support its mission and help expand the opportunities available to these young, neurodiverse individuals. Contributions can be made through the Duluth Sweat Venmo or directly to the program at 228 N 2nd Ave E, #1411 Duluth, MN 55805. This initiative not only aids in developing technical skills among participants but also contributes to a more inclusive and understanding society by valuing and nurturing the unique talents of individuals with ASD.
